The Wanging’ombe District Hospital is located in Wanging’ombe – one of six districts in the Njombe region. Wanging’ombe is located 130 km east of Mbeya, where the headquarters of Tembo cement is located. Around 90 percent of the entire Njombe region is rural, which means that this district hospital will provide healthcare for Tanzanian residents from a wide area.

Local contractors, architects and engineers are also involved in the construction of the district hospital. This project has created numerous employment opportunities for the residents in the surrounding areas. Things to know about mortar for bricklaying

The two most common types of mortar used for bricklaying are cement and lime mortar. They have different properties and strength characteristics, so it is important for contractors to which one to use for a project. LafargeHolcim Tanzania manufactures a few cement products that are suitable for use as mortar in brickwork. These are Tembo cement, TemboFundi and FastPlus.

Here are the things that contractors should know about mortar for bricklaying and brickwork construction:

1. Mortar does not affect the strength of brickwork – Various mortar mixes have different strengths, but they do not affect the overall strength of the brickwork. For example, mortars of mix ratios 1:6 and 1:4 have different strengths, but the brickwork will have the same strength in both cases, regardless. This is because the strength of brickwork depends on the bricks used, not the mortar.

2. An ideal mix ratio is 1:3 – When a mortar is mixed with one part cement (or lime) to three parts sand, it creates a dense mortar with fewer voids. This is an ideal mix ratio for most projects and general applications. A mix ratio richer than 1:3 is not used in bricklaying because of the high shrinkage rate. 

3. Lime mortar has a few advantages – Although lime mortar is generally weaker than cement mortar, it does have a few other advantages:

  • Lime mortar does not experience as much shrinkage as cement mortar.
  • Lime increases the workability and plasticity of the mortar mix.
  • Lime has good water retention and the mix does not dry out as quickly.
  • Lime can increase the volume of mortar by filling voids.
  • Lime makes the mortar more water-resistant and impervious to rain.

4. Lime mortar gains strength slowly – This is the reason why lime has a lower strength than cement. Lime mortar may develop early strength but it does not develop long-term strength as quickly as cement.

5. Cement-lime mortar ratios are important – When mixing cement and lime to form a hybrid mortar, it is important to know that leaner mixes (a ratio between 1:4 and 1:8) tend to be harsh when mixed with coarse sand. In these cases, plasticisers are recommended to help improve the workability of the mortar.

6. Sand affects the strength of mortar – The following factors of sand affect the strength of cement mortar, regardless of the ratio between cement and sand:

  • The grading of the sand.
  • The fineness or coarseness of the sand.
  • The angularity and roundness of the sand particles.
  • The fineness or coarseness of sand affects the plasticity of the mortar mix. Plasticity can also be increased by adding more cement to the ratio.
  • Fine sand results in a more workable mortar but more cement and water will be needed in the mix. This increases the water-cement ratio which reduces the strength of the mortar.

8. Curing is critical – The curing process is absolutely necessary to achieve the maximum strength of the mortar mix. Curing can take about seven days after bricklaying.

9. Common mistakes in brickwork mortar – The following are common mistakes that are made by contractors when making mortar mixes for bricklaying:

  • Not mixing the mortar properly.
  • Adding too much water to the mixture.
  • Laying a thick bed of mortar between bricks.
  • Using dry bricks that suck moisture out of the mortar.
  • Uneven joints between corners and bricks.
  • Voids in vertical joints between bricks.
  • Disturbance of bricks after laying.

10. Addition of pozzolana – Adding pozzolana to the mortar mix increases its strength and makes it more resistant to chemicals and harsh substances.

Things to consider when pouring concrete during the rainy season

Pouring concrete during rainy season

Construction projects are planned and executed all-year-round. This means that contractors need to build in some extreme weather conditions, from searing hot and dry temperatures to windy and rainy weather. These factors can all affect concrete and how it cures, but the rainy season can be particularly hard because it brings water and wind.

Contractors need to keep an eye on their concrete structures during the rainy season. Rain can affect the surface appearance of concrete as well as the internal strength. When the concrete is between its initial setting time and final setting time, the rain can leave patch marks and pores in the wet concrete. This can disturb the upper layer of the concrete before it can cure properly.

Rain can also affect the internal strength of concrete. If there is consistent and heavy rain for multiple days, the excess water on the concrete can slow down the curing process. This can affect the internal bonds between the concrete particles and make the mixture weaker than intended. Here are some other points to consider when pouring concrete in the rainy season.

1. Extra water in the concrete mixture during the rainy season

If you store your aggregates outside, the rain will make the sand and crushed stone wet. This will add extra water to the concrete mix, so remember to use less water when making a batch of concrete. You will also need to keep an eye on your cement and ensure that no moisture gets into the bags while they are being stored. The cement needs to be stored in a dry environment at all times.

2. Use waterproofing admixtures in your concrete

During the rainy season, consider using hydrophilic crystalline admixtures in your concrete batch. These admixtures react with water and cement to form calcium silicate crystals. The crystals block pores and microcracks in the concrete and prevent water from seeping into the structure. Essentially, they seal the concrete and protect it from excess water damage.

3. Avoid pouring concrete during heavy rains

Make sure that the weather conditions are not too wet or windy before you decide to pour concrete. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts and try to find a gap of at least 12 hours where there is no rain. Fresh concrete needs about 12 hours to start the curing process and any rain could affect this. The wind can also have a negative impact on the curing process. Strong winds can cause bleeding in the concrete and affect the evaporation rate of its internal moisture.

4. Rain can cause delays

It is a well-known fact that rain can affect traffic. This can create delays for the transport and delivery of concrete batches. Suppliers need to keep an eye on the weather and avoid making deliveries during the rain. If this is not possible, then drivers should plan to use alternative routes with less traffic. Any delays in delivery will be costly to the project and will allow excess water to affect the construction site.

5. Use waterproof covers to protect concrete

Plastic sheeting and waterproof canvas should be kept on-site during the rainy season. Once a concrete batch is poured, cover it with the sheeting to shield the concrete from the rain. This will keep moisture in the concrete and keep excess water out. Waterproof covers can also be used to protect aggregates and keep them dry.

6. Perform inspections after the rain

Once the rain has subsided, asses the concrete and see if there is any damage or pools of water on the surface. A simple scratch test can be done to see if the surface of the concrete has been affected by the rain. If there is any surface damage or dimples left by the rain, contractors can use a float to remove excess pools of water and smooth the surface of the concrete at the same time.

The key to ensure the success of a building project during the rainy season is preparation. Be ready for heavy rains and have the right equipment and materials on-hand to deal with the wind and water. Pouring concrete in the rain is not advisable – rather stop and wait for the rain to pass, then remove the surface water in the foundations or on the already-poured concrete before completing the pour.

How to prevent salt damage to your concrete structures

Salt is a natural mineral that can sometimes end up in your concrete mixture. It can either be present in the sand and aggregate or it can end up in the concrete if you are building in a seaside environment. It appears as white streaks or powdery crystals on the surface of cured concrete.

The effects of salt can damage concrete if left untreated, especially large areas of walls and floor. The problem is worse near the sea where salt in the wave spray and in the air can affect concrete structures. Constant exposure to salt can cause problems for concrete structures.

How does salt damage concrete structures?

Concrete is an alkaline material. Any exposure to mildly acidic substances or those containing chlorides could break the bonds between the cement and aggregates. Salt is sodium chloride, so it can weaken concrete and make it brittle in a few ways:

  • Salt can lower the pH of concrete. This makes the pores in the surface bigger which can allow more moisture, water and other chemicals seep into the concrete.
  • Salt is hygroscopic which means that it attracts and absorbs water. It can retain water in concrete which leads to damage, rot and increased pressure inside the structure.
  • Salt speeds up the carbonation process. Under ideal conditions, contractors want the carbonation process to be slow so that the concrete can cure properly.
  • Salt introduces chlorides to the concrete. These chlorides seem up concrete corrosion and make the structure brittle.

How to treat salt damage in concrete

The first sign of salt in concrete will be white streaks or a white powder on the surface of the structure. To treat salt and prevent further damage, rinse the surface of the concrete with clean water. Scrub the salt away with a brush, leaving no white substance behind.

Next, apply a good sealer to the surface of the concrete to prevent salty moisture from entering the concrete. Sealers help to keep water and moisture out of the concrete pores. Ideally, you will want to use a sodium or lithium silicate densifier sealer as these chemically react with salt in the concrete to permanently protect the structure.

If you cannot get a proper concrete sealant, then apply a protective coating to the surface of the concrete. This could be a layer of plaster or a few coats of paint – ideally, both will help to form a protective coating that will prevent salty moisture from penetrating the surface of the concrete structure.

The best way to prevent salt damage, however, is to ensure that you use clean water when mixing the concrete and use sand from a freshwater river bed. Then, apply a sealer or protective coating as soon as the concrete has cured. Prevention is the best cure, so look after you concrete structures from the outset – especially in coastal environments.

All construction projects should be inspected at least once a day. This will ensure that the quality of the structure is up to standards and that the work is being done properly. The inspection of concrete can be performed in three stages; pre-placement, during placement and post-placement. It will be beneficial to the contractor and the client if these steps are recorded and supervised. This will minimise any discrepancies during billing and the completion of work.

The lead supervisor on any construction site must check the workmanship and inspect the quality of the building on a daily basis. Here are the common construction errors that supervisors need to look for.

Common concrete construction mistakes

1. Inadequate concrete curing

The curing process is vital when it comes to the quality and strength of a concrete structure. Concrete needs to be kept hydrated for about 28 days after pouring to ensure that it cures sufficiently. The main cause of poor curing is not keeping the concrete wet during this time. This negatively affects the strength of the concrete and can cause it to shrink, resulting in cracks and a brittle structure.

2. Poor concrete compaction

Even if you use the highest-quality cement and building materials, poor concrete compaction will lead to a bad structure. Concrete compaction is important because it removes air bubbles and creates a solid, dense and well-bonded structure. Propper ramming and vibration is needed to ensure that all the trapped air inside the wet concrete is removed.

3. Concrete segregation 

This construction mistake is the result of poor mixing of cement, water and aggregates. If the aggregates and mortar mix are not properly mixed, the concrete can segregate. Segregation can also occur when concrete is dropped from a height. Contractors need to use chutes or pipes to transport mixed concrete down into a building basement. A concrete mix with a high volume of aggregates, or over-compaction, can also cause aggregates to sink in the concrete mix, leading to segregation.

4. Incorrect placement of steel rebar

The placement of steel rebar within a concrete structure is vital. It forms the inner skeleton of the structure and provides extra strength and reinforcement. Incorrect placement of steel rebar can lead to a weakened structure. If this rebar is exposed, it can also lead to rust and corrosion – especially in coastal regions. In the worst-case scenario, steel rebar that is badly placed can lead to a sudden collapse of the structure.

5. Concrete leakage in bad formwork

Concrete leakage is a common mistake that takes place when concrete is being placed and compacted in formwork. The formwork needs to be airtight and properly sealed. If the joints in the formwork are not tight, the wet concrete will seep through the gaps and the water inside the concrete will leak out. This will result in a hardened concrete with a high cement to water ratio. The concrete will be weaker, more brittle and prone to cracking and chipping.

6. Incorrect construction joints

This point leads on from the last – construction joints need to be created with proper preparation and execution in line with the original architect drawings. Before making joints between new concrete and old concrete, the surface of the old structure needs to be washed and prepared properly. This will ensure a proper bond between the two structures. If the construction joints are not good, a number of issues can arise, including moisture penetration, concrete staining, cracking, disconnection and compromised structural integrity.

7. Concrete with high water content

Experience is important when it comes to concrete mixing. Sometimes, inexperienced contractors do not use the right amount of cement, water and aggregates in a concrete mix. The most common of these mistakes is using too much water. A high water content will make the concrete slump and decrease its workability. Too much water will also affect the final strength of the mix.

These are common mistakes that can be made on construction sites by inexperienced builders or through poor supervision. Project managers need to inspect the building process and completed jobs on a daily basis to ensure that these mistakes are not being made. These mistakes can determine the final quality of a building so they need to be avoided.

Saruji inatengenezwaje?

Saruji ni moja ya viungo vya msingi katika zege. Poda ya saruji ikichanganywa na maji hutengeneza mchanganyiko ambao hugandana na mchanga na mawe yaliyo vunjwa vunjwa kuunda zege imara. Saruji hutengenezwa kutoka kwa mawe ya limestone na madini mengine kadhaa ambayo yametibiwa kwa kemikali na kuchomwa katika tanuru.

Limestone huchanganywa na madini mengine, kama vile mchanga, majivu, mchanga wa silika na ore ya chuma. Vina chomwa moto na kuunda dutu ngumu kama mwamba, ambazo husagwa vizuri na kuwa poda safi ya kijivu – ambayo ndio saruji tuijuayo.

Hatua za kutengeneza saruji

Hatua ya 1: Viungo vya msingi vinafikishwa katika kiwanda cha saruji. Limestone huvunjwa vunjwa na safu ya crusher na nyundo na kisha hupelekwa kupitia mikanda kwa hatua inayofuata.

Hatua ya 2:  Limestone iliyo vunjwa vunjwa inachanganywa na mchanga na udongo kwenye vifuniko vikubwa. Mchanganyiko unaopatikana hutiwa ndani ya joko.

Hatua ya 3: Joko la saruji inachoma mchanganyiko hadi 1500 ℃ katika ngoma kubwa za mzunguko wa silinda zilizo na matofali ya moto. Hizi kilabu kubwa huinamishwa chini ili viungo visogee kutoka upande mmoja hadi mwingine wakati wa uchomaji. Gesi hutolewa kutoka kwa mchanganyiko, na kuacha dutu mpya inayoitwa Klinka – vipunje vidogo vya mviringo vyenye rangi ya kijivu na takriban saizi sawa na marumaru/gololi.

Hatua ya 4: Klinka nyekundu na ya moto hutolewa kutoka mwisho wa joko na kisha hupitishwa katika kipozeo cha joko. Hewa yenye joto kutoka kwenye kipozeo hurejeshwa katika joko, ili kuokoa mafuta na nishati katika mchakato huu.

Hatua ya 5: Klinka iliyopoozwa huchanganywa na jasi na kisha hupelekwa kwa kinu cha kusaga ambapo husagwa na kuwa unga wenye vichembe chembe vidogo sana. Saruji ina vichembe vidogo sana kiasi ya kwamba Kilogramu moja ya saruji ina vichembe chembe takribani billioni 300.

Hatua ya 6: Poda ya saruji hupelekwa katika vinu vya kuhifadhia ambapo huingizwa kwenye mifuko ya 50kg au kutolewa kwa wakandarasi wa ujenzi kwa wingi kupitia magari ya matanki ya kubebea saruji.
