Risk assessment drives safety at LafargeHolcim Tanzania

The safety of our employees, contractors and customers is a top priority at LafargeHolcim Tanzania. To ensure that our safety standards are always the best that they can be, we perform regular risk assessments to identify areas of safety concern.

Risk assessment is the process of identifying hazards and risk factors that have the potential to cause harm. At LafargeHolcim Tanzania, no task is done without conducting a risk assessment first. Operations at our cement manufacturing facility in Mbeya are closely monitored to ensure that our staff members are safe.

Why does a risk assessment matter?

Performing risk assessments will protect workers and a business, as well as comply with regulations and laws. At least one employee from the business should attend risk assessment training to ensure that they are competent in hazard identification. Whether it is hauling pozzolana from the quarry or packing the bags of cement, a risk assessment is a prerequisite for any process.

How to do a risk assessment

There are five steps taken during a risk assessment; identifying the hazards, identifying who is at risk, evaluating the risk and control measures, implementing the findings and reviewing the results to make necessary changes.

1. Identify the hazards

There is a difference between a hazard and a risk. A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm; a risk is the likelihood of that potential harm being caused. Hazards can be identified through a number of different techniques. Walking around the workplace or talking to employees are the two most common ways of identifying hazards.

2. Identify who is at risk

Once you have identified the hazards, you need to assess who might be harmed and how. For example, workers walking around furnaces may be burned, or forklift operators may be struck by falling objects.

3. Evaluate the risk and control measures

This is the process of implementing safety measures to protect employees from the hazards. The ideal control measure is to remove the hazard entirely. If this is not possible, the hazards should be controlled as much as possible to minimise the risk of mistakes and injury.

4. Implement findings

Your findings should always be written down and recorded. This shows that you have done the job properly and followed all procedures necessary. Create a detailed plan of how to implement the findings and then carry out the tasks required to eliminate risks.

5. Review assessment and update

Risk assessments should be reviewed regularly to ensure that they are still up-to-date and functional. If a new risk is identified, the risk assessment should be updated to improve the safety conditions in the workplace.

Few work environments stay the same over time, so risk assessments should be conducted regularly to keep your workers safe at all times.
