Award-winning architect and LafargeHolcim Tanzania visit two local universities

Architect visits two Tanzanian universities

Pieter Mathews shares architectural knowledge with Tanzanian students

Award-winning South African architect, Pieter Mathews, visited two local universities with LafargeHolcim Tanzania during his recent visit to the country. Mathews shared valuable knowledge and insights into the architecture industry with students at Ardhi University and the University of Dar es Salaam. His focus was on the use of concrete and its various applications for architecture and construction.

Mathews also shared some innovative architectural concepts with the eager students at the universities. His company, Mathews and Associates Architects (MAAA), is based in Pretoria, South Africa. The firm has worked on numerous buildings, sculptures and public spaces that have won international awards and recognition. The students were also taught about the LafargeHolcim Tanzania product offerings.

University visits were well received

Mathews and the LafargeHolcim Tanzania team took a tour of the Ardhi University campus in Dar es Salaam before meeting the students. Around 300 students and 10 of their lecturers attended Mathews’ presentation on concrete and architecture.

The team then visited the University of Dar es Salaam’s College of Engineering Technology (COET) campus. Mathews and LafargeHolcim Tanzania visited the engineering laboratory at COET before giving the presentation to 100 architecture students. Architecture is a brand new course at COET; this year will see the first set of graduates qualify from the college.

LafargeHolcim Tanzania was the first company to share industry insights with COET students. Students and lecturers at both universities were inspired by Mathews’ presentation – the universities have asked for more training sessions and similar discussions to take place in the future.

LafargeHolcim Tanzania is always looking for ways to empower communities and advance the construction industry in the country. University visits and presentations are a great way to show students the real-world possibilities of engineering, construction and architecture.

Pieter Mathews has numerous publications

Publications of Pieter Mathews

The award-winning architect has been published multiple times

Pieter Mathews, a renowned architect from South Africa, will be hosting the first of LafargeHolcim Tanzania’s architecture Best Practice Sharing Sessions in May 2019. These FREE knowledge-sharing sessions will take place at the Building Materials Centre in Dar es Salaam (Masaki). Book your seat here.

As an award-winning and highly successful architect, Mathews has been published numerous times. He has authored books, compiled catalogues and been featured in an array of magazines. Here are some of his publications.

architexture

This is a book authored by Mathews that is a comprehensive guide to textures. It treats texture as a design element in itself, specifically with regard to concrete and buildings. In previous years, Mathews was often asked for information on texture in architecture but he could not refer clients to a specific book or resource. So, he decided to write architexture.

Texture is the only design principle that cannot be drawn accurately on architectural blueprints. It is also hard to describe textures in words. As a result, architexture focuses on the visual representations of various textures to ensure clarity of ideas. The photographs in the book were compiled over five years from some of the best photographers in South Africa.

This practical guide to texture aims to highlight the unique aspects of each material. The reference images were taken from recently-completed contemporary houses and buildings. They offer insight into the creation of textures and how to replicate them in any project. Ideas of culture, shape, pattern, seasons and light are all brought to life through the textures studied in architexture.

Detail Housed

Mathews studies originality and creativity in this book about South African house design. Detail Housed follows Mathews’ successful first publication, architexture. This book focuses on the importance of the details of architecture and design in the home and how they contribute to stylish living.

Detailed Housed takes a look at all the elements of a house, from front doors and stairs to door handles and taps – each element is studied closely and applied with a wealth of practical information. This book features a visual feast of creative ideas and architectural expression.

Mathews makes use of stunning photography, drawings and easy-to-understand explanations to highlight the importance of details in the home. Detailed Housed can be used as a valuable source of inspiration and reference for anyone building a modern home.

Contemporary Capital

This book highlights the unique architectural innovation and modern history of South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria. The book features over 80 projects by leading architectural practices, including Mathews and Associates Architects (MAAA) – Mathews’ own firm. Contemporary Capital is endorsed by the Pretoria Institute for Architecture (PIA) and is a tribute to the recently built projects in the city and surrounds.

Mathews edited Contemporary Capital and explains that the book aims to create an appreciation of Pretoria’s modern buildings and inspire higher standards in the architectural profession. The book is perfect for inspiring architects and designers, or can be used as a beautiful reference book in the home.

Cool Capital

Cool Capital is a design magazine that features a collection of all the public domain art and design projects executed by South African creatives, specifically those living in Pretoria. The guerilla design magazine takes an in-depth look at public artworks. It encourages citizens to creatively reimagine their environment and the cities in which they live.

Cool Capital Guerilla Citizens

This catalogue is compiled by Mathews and is the world’s first publication that compiles all the guerilla art interventions by Pretoria-based citizens. Cool Capital Guerilla Citizens looks at how these artworks express the emotions and feelings of residents living in Pretoria.

Saadjies

Saadjies (seeds) is a catalogue that features over 100 travelling sculptures from South Africa. The catalogue is a Cool Capital initiative that makes these sculptures more accessible. The sculptures were photographed and exhibited outside traditional art galleries. The curated collection of images was formally exhibited in five locations around South Africa.

These are some of the major publications created by Mathews. Tanzanian architects, designers and contractors will benefit from attending his Best Practice Sharing Sessions. These sessions will take place on 6, 7 and 8 May 2019. The morning sessions will run from 9am to 12pm and the afternoon sessions will take place from 1pm to 4pm.

Seats are limited to ensure exclusivity so booking is important. Fill out our online application form to apply for a seat. LafargeHolcim Tanzania will confirm the success of your application and assign the date and time of the session which the applicant can attend.
